Truck Up A PoleThis pick-up truck had veered off the exit ramp of SB Hwy at Arroyo Seco Road and rode up the guy wires for the utility pole. The driver was having a medical emergency. We stabilized the vehicle with two long struts and got someone in to assess the patient. Shortly afterward, a mutual aid company arrived and using one of our short and another long strut from them, we completed stabilization and extricated the patient.

Bridge WreckATLANTA, Ga. - Atlanta fire officials say two people were injured when a truck crashed into a railway bridge in northwest Atlanta on Tuesday morning, causing a huge chunk of concrete to fall onto the truck and another car below. It happened at a bridge that hangs over Bolton Road just after 9 a.m.
Authorities say a 13-foot high truck was trying to clear the bridge, which is only 13 feet, 5 inches high, when the accident happened. FOX 5's Darryl Carver reports the 10-wheel truck had a hydraulic lift attached to the back of it, and that's what hit the bridge.
The impact caused a 25-foot section of the bridge, at least 12 inches thick, to collapse on the south side and onto the truck, trapping the driver. Firefighters say it took nearly an hour to remove the driver from the smashed truck.
Lake Oswego ExtricationLAKE OSWEGO -- Firefighters cut driver out of the wreckage of a one-car crash that occurred on Southwest Southwood Drive Monday night.
The driver, whose name was not released because of federal privacy laws, was rushed by ambulance toOHSU Hospital. A condition report is not available.
Battalion Chief David Morris of the Lake Oswego Fire Department said firefighters were called to investigate the crash shortly after 9 p.m. They found a car balancing on its side against a sloping yard. A tree had been sheared off and the driver was unresponsive.
After calling for help by two additional fire crews, firefighters placed stabilization struts under the leaning car. Firefighters then used hydraulic extrication equipment to cut off the car's roof, and the driver was removed to a waiting ambulance.
Vancouver WreckRescuers arrived to a one-vehicle car crash in the Shumway neighborhood Thursday to find the car on its side, a woman trapped inside and a toddler wandering in the street.
The strange crash at East 33rd and F streets was reported about 1:18 p.m., said Firefighter-spokesman Joe Spatz with the Vancouver Fire Department.
It appeared the woman had been driving east when, for an unknown reason, she veered right, hit a sign and then lurched onto the steel guide cables that hold up a utility pole.
"That apparently acted like a ramp and it flipped her car over," Spatz said.
AMR Northwest ambulance paramedics scooped up the little boy, who was not believed seriously hurt.
The Lexus sedan's trunk door came open, with newspaper sections and Lego toys spilled onto the pavement.
Firefighters used a set of Rescue 42-brand struts to hold the car in place. The device, fairly recently acquired, has telescoping struts that are held in place by a bottom strap that forms a triangle and prevented the car from rolling
Marysville Big Rig ExtricationOverturned big rig this morning just up the road from my residence at the Yuba/Butte county line. NEU Sta-95 (Marysville) initial response area. Mutual aid from Butte County brought T-74 and E-73 with Pickard,Long, Martinez and Bryant.
Major extrication of the driver who was trapped in the cab, one leg wrapped around the dash, other leg out through the windshield and partially under the truck. Severe road rash and bi-lateral fractured legs.
I think that Sta-95 and T-74/E-74 used about every trick and tool in the book, including the heavy tow for lifting/stability and made a third door with the cutters and air chisel through the back of the cab.
Extrication took one hour and forty minutes, and it appears that the driver will survive.
T-74/E-73 did a fantastic job, and all that experience really paid off today. The area CHP commander told me that in all his years on the job he had never seen such a difficult accident scene go so well with discipline, communication, safety and skill.

Tree Through A HomeSpringfield Oregon Tower 3 responded to assist our medic unit and Mohawk Rural Fire District extricate a patient from under a tree that fell through the home during a wind storm in March.
Crews used the 42 struts with a chain cradle under the tree in conjunction with cribbing and air bags to lift the tree off the patient.
The extrication took about 90 minutes while trees were still falling due to high winds. Patient was a trauma activation with some serious injuries but survived.

Alaska Snow RescueHouston (Alaska) Fire Department is a strong believer in Rescue 42 stabilization equipment. Enclosed are some photos of a recent call we were on, in which we deployed Rescue 42s to stabilize a very unstable pickup.
Call History -- HFD was dispatched to a 2 vehicle MVA with no injuries and no entrapment. Houston Police Department was already on location and requested HFD respond to assist with scene support and traffic control (our Police Department had only one officer on duty at the time). On arrival, and immediately after the rescue truck was parked, a vehicle came over the hill and lost control, narrowly missing two firefighters, one police officer, a tow truck driver and the 2 occupants of the vehicles. All had been standing at the exact place where the out-of-control pickup crashed into the Uhaul trailer. Rescue 42s were used to stabilize the orange pickup. The windshield was cut which allowed the uninjured but entrapped person to walk away from his accident.
Rescue 42s made this rescue possible.
Van vs. MotorcycleCedar Hammock Fire Rescue, B Shift - Motorcycle vs a full size van.
Two trauma alerts. Both patients were flown to Bay Front Medical Center in St. Pete.
The call was dispatched as a motorcycle vs a van with a person trapped under the van. E-211 and Battalion Two arrived and confirmed that a person was completely under the van and there was a total of two patients. E-221 arrived for assistance. The spreaders were used from both E-221 and E-211 to lift the vehicle in the rear at the bumper area. The patient was located just in front of the rear pumpkin. The patient was a larger female lying face down with her head up against the rear tire. The patient was being impaled by the bracket that supports the left driver's side rear shock. There was no easy way of removing her with the exception of lifting the van as high as we could possibly do it safely.
While the vehicle was being lifted with the spreaders, on scene crews utilized the Rescue 42 struts to stabilize the vehicle during the lift. On scene crews also utilized our; step chocks, cribbing and the R-42 folding Sharks to aid in vehicle stabilization. The patient was successfully removed and transported to the landing zone.
On duty crews did an outstanding job. It was a call that you had to think it out before you reacted.
Semi Rollover Crushes VehicleCLIO -- It was a dramatic rescue Tuesday morning as crews pulled a man trapped in his car out from underneath a semi-truck.
NBC25's cameras were at the scene on Southbound I-75 between Clio and Birch Run around 6 a.m. after a semi tractor-trailer rolled over onto a car. The car landed in a ditch and the truck smashed on top of it. Amazingly, the driver of the car, Marc Keineth of Millington, was not killed. Keineth tells NBC25 he was able to send text messages while trapped in the vehicle.
Crews worked to get him out from the car, but were forced to drag the car out from beneath the semi-truck. The jaws of life were used to extract the crash victim. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital for evaulation. He is home now with a neck sprain, bruises and other minor injuries.
The interstate was closed for about an hour.

Jenks Ditch RescueWe responded to the call of a rollover with a victim trapped inside. It was a convertable car that had rolled over into a concrete drainage ditch and was laying on its top. We used the Rescue 42 Jacks to lift the car about a foot in order to gain access to the doors. Once raised, we removed the doors and removed the patient. The patient was released from the hospital that day. The driver fell asleep at the wheel and the vehicle left the road way, and according to police, went airborn for more than 70ft before rolling over and wedging the vehicle in the drainage ditch.

Westminster Culvert RescueOne person was killed and two others were hurt Wednesday when a driver lost control of a Chevrolet pickup truck and crashed into a flood-control channel, Westminster police said. All three in the pickup attended local high schools.
The truck rolled and crashed into the flood-control channel at Rancho Road and Spa Drive about 3 p.m., Westminster police Officer Van Woodson said.
Kody Kessler, 18, of Westminster, was declared dead at the scene by arriving rescuers. Kessler attended Ocean View High School, Van Woodson said.
Two other teens crawled out of the pickup and climbed to the top of the flood-control channel. Neighbors helped the teens get over a hurricane fence.
Van Woodson described the injuries of the two survivors as non-life threatening.
Westminster police said Jared Von Grote, 18, of Huntington Beach and a Marina High School student was the driver of the pickup.
Kristopher Howell, 18, of Huntington Beach and an Ocean View High School student was the second passenger in the pickup.

Car Under Train TresselThis is a accident that C shift did the other night. The driver was not hurt just scared to get out of the car. The car is jambed under a train bridge.
One thing that you can not see is that the passenger side has a chain that is secured to a truck parked in the bank of the train tracks. The accident took place in Warsaw, Indiana.
Arizona Bus CrashThe crash happened about 5:30 a.m. on westbound Interstate 10 when the bus rear-ended a pickup truck, swerved into the median of the divided highway, then back across the westbound lanes. It crossed the right-hand shoulder, left the road and rolled.
Six people were ejected and killed. Sixteen others were injured and taken to hospitals. Eleven of the injured were taken by ambulance to various hospitals and five were flown by medical helicopter. Among the injured were two 11-year-olds and a 16-year-old, Graves said.
The accident scene became a mass of police and rescue personnel as ambulances arrived and rescuers broke out windows of the bus to get to the victims, who were treated in an area in the middle of the interstate.
Complex Portland StabilizationClackamas County Fire crews freed a driver trapped in his car after it crashed into a tree down an embankment off Highway 99E Thursday.
Oregon State Police said 50-year-old John Michael Talpa of Gladstone had just passed another car near Lakewood Drive when he clipped the front of that car and lost control, veering down an embankment.
When first responders arrived on scene they found something they do not see everyday. "I'm seeing the underside of the car," said firefighter Tyson Lowther. "We shouldn't see this part."
Talpa's Volkswagon Jetta landed vertically on its front bumper and he was still inside. "We're down there before the vehicle is stabilized, so it could've shifted," added Lowther. "He could've freaked out and tried to get out of the door."
The first thing firefighters did was secure the car to the tree it was resting against. "We can't let that vehicle go any further down the embankment," said Lowther.
After the car was secure, firefighters began what they call a low angle rescue. They carefully pulled Talpa out of the car and lifted him up the brush filled hillside. "It's difficult, but we practice it a lot," added Lowther.
Talpa was out of the car and on his way to the hospital within forty minutes of the accident. "It could've been really bad for this guy," said Steve McAdoo of Clackamas County Fire. McAdoo said had Talpa not been wearing a seat belt, one of two things would have happened. "He would've either gone into the windshield the way he was going or he would've been ejected on the side," added McAdoo.
But neither fate came to be. Instead, firefighters performed a rescue they will remember for a long time. "Dealing with the incline, the mud, and the vehicle on its nose, I'd have to say it's very rare," said Lowther.
Talpa was evaluated and released from the hospital.

Northshore Car Into A House
Perrysburg Truck Down A HillI was on the first arriving unit and I was tasked with setting up the tele-cribs and stabilizing the car (I guess all of those demos that I have done the last few years paid off). Upon our arrival, we had three by-standards that had stopped when the accident happened holding up the rear of the truck while our paramedics starting assessing the (2) people trapped inside the vehicle. Within (2) minutes, I had the (4) struts in place and extrication started immediately afterwards.
This was the first time my department has gotten the opportunity to use this system on an actual accident and the members on my department were absolutely amazed at what was accomplished with this system. The terrain we were on was rough and very wet/soft so that added to the challenge of this rescue.
Thanks again for the great product. It is wonderful to be able to sell this product and know how effective it can be in a rescue situation.

Light Structural SupportQuestion: I figured that I would pose this question to the proper people, the people who designed and manufactured the rescue 42 system. Is this a proper use for your system? I suspect not, but I want to hear it from the professionals before I set someone straight. Thank you very much.
Eric SchraderFire Lieutenant, Station 822
Answer: (by Tim O'Connell, president of Rescue 42): Rescue 42 struts are designed to handle light structural rescue. In fact the heads of the struts are designed to do exactly what your struts are doing by supporting the edges of a 2X6,8, 10, etc. The two small notches are for driving nails to prevent the head from sliding if the load shifts (we live in earthquake country).
The height of the struts in the picture appears to be 5', and the struts are double pinned which gives each strut a maximum working load of 11,000 lbs (with a 2:1 safety factor on top of that). This provides a safe load capacity of 22,000 lbs between the two struts which I believe is much more that what is needed in this application. Looking at the size of the joists, I assume that this is a multi-story building. It is hard to see what load bearing structures (besides the brick) were knocked out (if any). The head of the bed is against a load bearing wall.
In my opinion, putting in a couple of struts was the appropriate action. My guess is that if these were 4X4's, everyone would be happy. In fact these two struts are stronger that wood 4X4's would be, with no chance that there is a knot or crack hiding in the wood. So this looks OK to me. I have included a photo of another department (right) who found themselves in a similar situation.
What IS incorrect in this picture is that the crew used yellow composite pins to double pin the base. The second pin in the bases needs to be another steel base plate pin which is long enough to reach completely across the steel "ears" on the base plate.

Oyen FD Huge Semi RescueWe had the crane lift the truck frame off of the cab that was no longer attached, just a ball of metal. When we lifted the frame we had the crane, track hoe, and 35 ton wrecker all tied in to keep the truck, cab, and tanker all stable. Too long of an extrication (5 hours). The driver survived.

Chico Tanker RolloverAt about 7:25 am, a double trailer truck hauling gasoline and diesel flipped over on the HWY 99, Skyway onramp. The truck came to rest, on its top, less than 30 feet from where a fuel tanker overturned onto its side March 26. The driver was able to get out of the flipped cab on his own and sustained very minor injuries.
Because the truck was fully loaded with 5,600 gallons of gasoline in its main tank, and had flipped onto its top, it presented a huge challenge for hazmat crews and firefighters.
Firefighters grounded the truck and trailer to prevent potential explosions from static electricity, then performed the delicate drilling operations. Devices called "stingers" were then inserted in six holes to begin draining the fuel and transferring it to another tanker. The TeleCrib struts were placed on the tank to help stabalize it during the operation.

Hooversville Tanker RolloverTwo firefighters were taken to the hospital after a tanker truck rolled onto its side on the way to a brush fire Thursday afternoon.
Two firefighters were in the Hooversville Volunteer Fire Co. 1994 Mack Tanker on Falling Timber Road at 3:32 p.m. when the truck landed on its side while rounding a curve. Fire Chief James A. Karashowsky said he had not talked to the firefighters and was not sure how the crash happened. The brush fire the firefighters were responding to was about a quarter mile up the road.
"I still didn't get an opportunity to talk to them," he said.
Karashowsky declined to release the firefighters' names. Both were taken by ambulance to Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown.
"They were veteran firefighters," he said.
The fire truck was purchased new and was fully paid for, Karashowsky said.
"It was my pride and joy," he said.
The truck will most likely be totaled, he added.
"If I had to guess, I would say totaled," he said. "The cab is shot and that is not counting anything underneath."
The truck was hauling 3,000 gallons of water, which drained onto the road. Crews worked to salvage hoses and other equipment, but Karashowsky said he will not know what can be salvaged until he can get a closer look.
The truck was insured. State police are investigating the crash, but did not release any additional details Thursday evening.

Big Rig Rollover This incident actually started late in the night of 4/25, about 23:45 hrs. Station 71 Springbank and Station 50 Redwood Meadows were sent to a rollover motor vehicle collision with entrapment on the Trans-Canada Highway just west of Calgary.
50 Rescue arrived first and found a semi-truck on its side in the "triangle" of grass just after an interchange where the road surface curved moderately to the left. The driver was still in the vehicle, with the trailer on its side and the truck 3/4 on its left side and roof. Both the truck and trailer were heavily damaged and deformed, with the vehicle body sheared off the frame.
Extrication began immediately with the crews of 50 Rescue and 71 Pump using two sets of rescue tools from both pieces of apparatus. The semi-trailer was a refrigerated van being used as a dry cargo van, hauling closet doors. The weight of the cargo destroyed the trailer body and tore the floor of the trailer away from the fifth wheel/kingpin plate. The cab and sleeper were twisted about 25° off center on the frame rails.
Evidence at the scene seems to imply the truck left the right side of the road just before the overpass and struck the pavement that lined the hill underneath the bridge, leading from the base of the road going under to the base of the bridge crossing over. The truck didn't make contact with the bridge itself, but the impact with the cement tore out the 6ft driveshaft, embedding it in the ground to where only 18" remained visible above the soil. The truck continued under the bridge and straight ahead, as the road (as mentioned) curved to the left. The truck continued to roll onto its left side and ended up in its final resting place about 200 feet beyond the bridge in the grass verge.
Extrication took 1 hr 41 min to complete. At one point, a heavy rescue from the City of Calgary was special-called, but was canceled en route when the onscene crews managed to complete a successful extrication.

Car In A TreeThe car came off the Interstate, flew over the road that goes under the Interstate and ended up against this tree, which stopped it from going into the creek. This accident took place in our District, which has a longer than usual response time, due to our request for the Winters Fire Department to respond with one engine for assistance since this call was less than 2 miles from their station.
Our initial engine on scene secured the vehicle to the tree with a chain to keep it from falling. Upon the arrival of Winters Fire Department, we had them set up their Rescue 42 system to completely secure the car.
At that time the patient was removed from the vehicle and transported to a local hospital. The set up was very fast and simple. This was the one accident that prompted us to buy our own set.

Madison Snow RolloverOn Saturday 12/17/05 two days after receiving training and placing in service our new Rescue42 Struts, the Madison Fire Department was called to assist Skowhegan and Cornville Fire with an unstable vehicle. The vehicle had overturned and came to rest on a culvert. The rear of the vehicle was hanging with no support. The patient's head was sticking out the rear window and there was approximately 8 inches of space.
The struts were placed to stabilize the vehicle before the C-Posts could be cut. The C-Posts were cut and Spreaders were used to open the gap in the rear window. The car was lifted about 4 inches with the Rescue42 struts. The patient was removed and transported to a local hospital. Although the injuries were minor, if the car had shifted in any way the end result could have been tragic.
